In its third year, WNYC's Werk It is finally landing on the west coast. The three-day women’s podcast festival will take over the Ace Hotel this October, and while there are dozens (hundreds?) of reasons to go, we’ve narrowed it down to our top four.
Close your eyes and think of a woman who inspires you. If she’s in media, there’s a good chance she’ll be on stage at this year’s Werk It. Lena Waithe, hot off her Emmy win for Master of None? She’s speaking. Nina Jacobson, producer for a little film series called The Hunger Games? She’ll be there. And the list goes on with events featuring Jessica Williams, Amber Rose, Kara Swisher, Ilene Chaiken, Little Everywhere’s Jane Marie (come say hi) and dozens more.
Guests at Werk It share an obvious interest in podcasting, but not everyone knows the difference between room tone and noisefloor. That’s what Podcast Bootcamp is for. The one-day crash course covers everything from conducting interviews to cutting tape. Put it all together in a session at the pop-up studio, where engineers will answer questions and offer feedback on your newly acquired skills.
Podcasting is one of those things that seams really easy — and then you try it. Get a healthy dose of reality (and a bigger dose of motivation) at How I Make It, a series of sessions where podcast producers and hosts reveal the ins and outs of making a hit show. Among those dishing will be the women behind Making Oprah, Accused, StartUp and The Daily.
One of the things we like most about Werk It is the crowd, a solid mix of podcasting rookies and veterans. It’s a great place to pick up friends and mentors. This year, organizers say they’re expecting attendees from 32 states and 11 countries, including Spain, Finland, Peru and France. Between sessions, you might also rub elbows with talent, execs and producers from WNYC Studios, The New York Times, Buzzfeed, NPR, Gimlet Media or Vox. Now might be a good time to print business cards.
Coming to town for Werk It and interested in podcasting? We’d love to meet you. Get in touch for a tour of Little Everywhere’s studio.
